Pictionary is a fun, classic party game for all ages! Whether you're looking for an icebreaker game for a classroom or family reunion, or even just a good game for family game night, Pictionary is an excellent choice.

Have fun with family and friends, while developing your drawing skills and putting them to the ultimate test. If you've never played before, you're missing out, and there are a few things you need to know to get started!

How to Play Pictionary

You could always go to the store and buy the official Pictionary, but if you don't have time to get to the store, or just don't want to spend the money, try making your own game with just a few things you already have lying around the house!

Number of players: 4+

What you need:

  • Timer
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Index cards
  • Dice

Setup:

  • Choose five or six categories (ex: people, places, things, animals, actions, etc.).
  • Write words of varying difficulties on each card.
  • Place cards into piles of the correct category, then shuffle the piles.
  • Assign each category a number to correspond with the dice.
  • Set out your materials, and you're ready to start!

How to play:

  • Divide into teams of two or more, and roll a die to see who goes first. Appoint a "judge" to hand out cards and set the timer.
  • The team that starts rolls the die and receives a card from the category that corresponds with the number; the timer is set for 60 seconds, and the judge says "start."
  • The artist has 60 seconds to draw, and the rest of the team must guess what the artist is drawing in the allotted timeframe.
  • The artist may not talk, make noises, or gesture, and absolutely no letters or numbers are allowed in the pictures.
  • If guessed correctly, the team gets a point and gets to go again. If they are wrong, it's the next team's turn to repeat the above.
  • Set a limit to determine the winner, such as "the first team to get 25 points wins!"

Now, in order to make your own game, you're going to need a bunch of Pictionary words. With that being said, there are three levels of difficulty in Pictionary. Words can be easy, medium, or hard. Be sure to make an even mix of the three!

Gameplay Variations

Obviously, when you're making your own Pictionary game, you can play however you want! Here are some common variations to try next game night:

  • Alternate the team that draws next regardless of whether or not the previous drawing was guessed correctly.
  • Opposing teams can have a chance at guessing, simultaneously or after the time runs out in order to earn points.
  • Teams go head to head each round. Artists both draw the same word, and the team who guesses first earns the points.
  • Assign different point values for easy, medium, and hard words.
  • Forgo the dice and just draw cards.

This is such a fun game to play, and with the unlimited possibilities for words to draw, you have unlimited options for gameplay! Grab some chips and dip, some friends or family, and be prepared to have a blast! If you're not a great artist, that's okay; there's always Charades.
